...AND THE RETURN OF GODSPEED YOU! BLACK EMPEROR.......
bit late, i'm sure...but i've been busy/ill consistantly...
Having had people like me looking forward to this festival for many months, and aching to see Godspeed for years, it would seem the organisers and headliners had their work cut out for them. Having said that, the bands, although very odd many of them were, performed well and did the £180 I spend on the ticket justice. I'd never been to ATP before, and it being at Butlins I thought it better not to expect anything at all, apart from the comeback of one of the greatest bands to ever grace the planet.
The term " not for everyone" springs to mind when describing Godspeed's music to people but the reality of that statement could be found even at their own festival, something I found completely staggering...
It's is funny how a gig that I personally was describing as one of the best live performances I'd ever seen, was described by a friend of a friend as "alright"...even funnier when he went on to say he had left their gig prematurely as there was "somethin' on the telly I wanted to watch"...
Strange how we experience it all so differently. Whether standing completely still, eyes closed, letting the music overwhelm...or topless, erratically rocking out to the sound of the end of the world.... the true GYBE fans I feel were truely entertained.
As far as the other bands were concerned, the selection was interesting and for the most part enjoyable. The choice of acts at the festival was at times questionable (Weird Al), and the variety was in parts slightly limited. However, despite these slight reservations, it was definitely more interesting than the big events that the majority of people go to yearly...(e.g. reading, glasto...etc)
my top highlights:
matana roberts : her beautiful sax playing was a real suprise in one of my weakest moments of the festival.
boban i marko markovic orchestra : very enthusiastic live act, brought serious amounts of fun to many in the festival.
Like many GY!BE fans of my age (which you don't need to know) my following of them has been, until late, a heartbreaking tale of bad timing, and endless waiting. That wait came to a overdue end on Friday night, with the post-rock heavyweights' return and the future of the genre (if you can call it that) looking finally assured.
I first heard Godspeed on my own, in the dark, on headphones, under the influence of a few nightcaps and the feeling never really wore off. Although a sound often described as "not for everyone" their music compares to the classical score of any exciting movie, both in its epicness and composition, a feat that most music made today struggles to achieve.
i have seen them 4 times since the beginning of december...
and yes...i'd see them again if money wasnt an issue...
this vid is from their first live show since their split...
if u go see them...chances are they'll probably play this...
