Curtis Plum - Two Hats
David Byrne & Brian Eno - Strange Overtones
Every so often...(maybe too often some may believe) we have to post our favourite tracks. In my case, there are many tracks on this blog that I would say I rate, most likely in the form of words such as: raw, nang, banging, legendary... And this track is all of those words.
It has a Mr David Byrne, of Talking Heads fame, a band that while most of the time fails to float my boat above water...sometimes, find the most elegant blend of unique vocals and equal musical backing. The man and the band obviously talented, but catered towards not everyone palette.
Companionship on this track comes from a man who I have more than once slandered in conversation, for apart from the track An Ending, I had felt he had never created anything worthy of his status in the music world.
Their brilliant song, it would seem, is the only thing that could possibly get me to shut my mouth.
To veterans....

Mogwai - Rano Pano
I should have posted this last week but didn't get around to it. The free release taster of the album to come next year has us all hoping, without knowing what we should be actually expecting. Judging by this first song (which isn't advisable...) the album will be another loud one with more of an electronic sound to it, without actually sounding very electronic at all.
I can't wait to be proved wrong.
Whatever it does sound like... I think it's a pretty safe bet to say we can expect another fine LP from post-rock's most consistent offering...
Geoff Barrow's Beak
Here is a strange kinda post-rock from one of the portishead members. Geoff Barrow's new project, Beak> and a live performance of the most accessible track on the album.

MOST DERELICT, SIR...
the end of our 52 Commercial Road feature of the last few weeks...
the finally unveiled second full-length was played in it's entirety down in Camberwell last night... And, as expected, it met expectations...
It's always a nice feeling when you've been following a band's progress, and they provide you with the substance to back all of your bullshit-talk you've been sprouting for 4 years. The case has been especially compelling of 52. Having been lucky enough to have heard them quite early on, they have gone on an impressive journey, creating some of the most exciting post-rock that it seemed, no-one would ever hear. But, all fears that the band would go on without the recognition they have earned seemed to evaporate, in the most fitting of venues, last night, as the place was substantially filled.
The album is an obvious choice for fans of post-rock music but what is different about it, compared with the masses of dreary, repetitive and uninspired that I have been unlucky enough to have heard, is it has 'soul'... by which i obviously mean the songs sound like the efforts of hours of painstaking attention to detail...rather than drawnout chord progression with some delay slapped on it. It is the best representation of their work to date, and a massive credit should go to the production, which until this point had not fully captured their sound, but has gradually improved over time.

the album...

SAW THIS BAND SUPPORTING 52 COMMERCIAL ROAD LAST NIGHT....WELL WORTH INVESTIGATING FURTHER
x-tg
skip through abit and turn the volume up.... sounds intresting, i bet theyre sick live.
and that concludes my tab on the highlights of bands at ATP you may not have heard of (i know i hadnt).... the ones im looking forward to most are the country teasers, bardo pond, the boban markovic orchestra, deerhoof, and of course.... the berg sans nipple..... really looking forward to that.... though many bands there sound promising. all in all i think this will be better than glastonbury etc, im really impressed with the composition of bands; they work well with each other, despite many not sounding amazing by themselves. im glad because i was starting to get a little worried..... please add more to the atp tag, i think we need to get geared up!
LAND OF KUSH - against the day
hmmmm. worth a look, bet theyre raw live.... sorry but we needed this, just click the atp tag to get mangoe giraffes inside peek at whats to come ;)
hangedup - kinetic work
more for atp... ive now created a tag
ohsees - block of ice
more for atp
the berg sans nipple - along the quai
YES, these guys sound awsome to me, remind mee of early mum.... what a find... starting to look forward to this festival.
country teasers - adam wakes up
sorry for repeat posts, i know i always post too much, but ive been going through all the bands at atp cos i dont really know any except weird al and neurosis (im not a fan, though neurosis arnt too bad) and bardo pond and godspeed plus more recently deerhoof (good), who are awsome.... lots of strange shit some good some bad, but im posting what i think are the highlights up here...
bardo pond - tantric porno
a lot of the music at atp is either bizarre as hell, or by people who look like theyve literally never played in front of more than 10 people before. looking forward to bardo pond though, should be a highlight...
kimya dawson - walk like thunder
kimya dawson (of the moldy peaches) showed up and played this song live at the eyedea tribute show last night onstage next to slug and aesop rock... quite like it.
REUBEN - SCARED OF THE POLICE
OLD SKOOL......REMEMBERED THIS SONG, DON'T THINK I'VE HEARD IT IN ABOUT 5 YEARS....STILL PRETTY GOOD I THINK
Godspeed You Black Emperor - Providence
It had to happen sometime...
...all of us lucky to afford the steep price...in preparation for next months overdue return of quite possibly the greatest post-rock band ever...
...no pressure godspeed...
aesop rock - 1 of 4
aesop rock. id argue hiphops finest. this is why... i know youve all heard this track before, but i still cant hear it without getting chills. one of the most serious and heartfelt songs ive ever heard.
buck 65 - secret splendor
when i first heard buck 65 i was not impressed. his slow delivery and basic lyrical sound must've put me off way too much. in retrospect, he is, in fewer words more meaningful and poetic than most of the men in hip-hop...
this track is a favourite of mine, particularly, i think, because the beat is so beautiful....almost an in rainbows sound to it...
i hope u like
sage francis - threewrite (emancipator remix)
upon reloading my ipod with a different batch of songs the other day...(as u do...) i shoved on all the sage francis i have in my library, including many tracks i have never got round to listening to...the perils of a large music collection....
anyway, this ace was in the deck...and to find it all i had to do was shuffle...
CAN - Future Days
found this band while looking into the origins of proggresive rock, wonder why ive never found them before.... this was the first song off the fifth album of the same name, released in 1973.... it has a long ass intro (almost 2 mins) but is amazing- the album is better than the song, as with most prog rock....
artists who list 'can' as an influence include the sex pistols, david bowie, the talking heads, sonic youth, the stone roses, brian eno, radiohead and UNKLE.
eyedea - shadows have shadows
who else could writelike this at 18? nothing really needs to be said. RIP
deerhoof - fresh born
gotta love a bit of deerhoof. deerhoof - the real womans cameltoe.... cant wait to see these guys at atp.
camel - supertwister
im sure youll all say im slow jumping on the bandwagon considering brian eno was involved a little later on, but shit - this band is pretty proggresive for 1974... all sounds pretty consistant from what i hear too. definatley worth checking out more.
BOMBAY BICYCLE CLUB - ALWAYS LIKE THIS
I'VE BEEN FOLLOWING THIS BAND FOR A WHILE NOW....FOR ME THEY MANAGE TO FUSE INDIE WITH A MORE ALTERNATIVE VIBE TO CREATE AN ACTUAL INTERSTING LISTEN RATHER THAN A GUILTY PLEASURE....AND THE FRONTMAN IS POSSIBLY ONE OF THE BEST OF HIS GENERATION....WELL, I THINK SO ANYWAY
cowboy bebop theme
thought after some admitidly 'so-so' hiphop, i had to end on a high. if anyone hasnt seen cowboy bebop, its possibly the greatest cartoon of all time, and has possibly the greatest soundtrack to go with it...
cage - i never knew you
probly my fav of his songs, like a lot of the lyrics - but not overly amazing, and his new album gets unbearably cheesy at times, this is the least chedder track, and its still got a lot of cliche undertones in my opinion...... still quite like it though. his story is really what makes him a rap 'product'. which is kind of sad given the circumstances.
cage - stripes
this is a true story about the rappers dad named bill murray. cage had a fucked up life; lived with his father who was a soldier at a base in germany dealing heroin who beat him an his mum, till he got caught dealing and was discharged. then they moved to new york and he kept beating them till he got in an armed standoff with state troopers after he threatened to kill his family with a shotgun. cages life continued to be fucked up till he at 16 he was in court for something and his mum persuaded the judge he was mentally unstable, so he was sent to a psychiatric hospital where he stayed for 18 months after he wass misdiagnosed and pumped full of an experimental drug which sent him into a depression and he tried to kill himself numerous times. during this period, he was also regularly restrained by straight jacket and 10 point bed restraints for periods lasting upto 13 hours..... throughout the 90s he developed a serious drug problem and started a rap career till he sobered up and got more experimental over the last decade (this is quite old)... theyre making a film about his life which should be pretty raw. well grimey, at any rate.
as a rapper hes definatly not one of my favs, but he has his moments. eminem has been accused of imitating his flow after slim shady lp an marshall mathers lp. probly not a direct imitation, but i can definatly tell the resemblance in flow. some complex rhming patterns on this track; 'when little billy feed her ground up jesus powder, woulda beat her louder if it woulda pushed the fetus out her'.
MODESELEKTOR - IN LOVING MEMORY
THIS ONE'S A ELECTRONIC BUILD-UP FROM MODESELEKTOR. A STRANGE, BUT SOMETIMES BRILLIANT DUO FROM BERLIN. I BEST KNOWN THEM FOR REMIX OF RADIOHEAD, AND THEIR EXTREMELY DIRTY ALBUMS "HAPPY BIRTHDAY" AND "HELLO MUM".......
skip james - hard time floor blues
sure nick cave kills it - outside skip james hood, but lets face it; nick cave aint quite 'skip james' good.... and in this video skips in his late 60s and hadnt been playing regularly for over 35 years.
skip james - devil got my woman
thought this page needed a break from the postrock/hiphop exclusive content. heres a couple songs to showcase talent from previous generations...... no one seems to be able to sing with this quality of delivery or emotion anymore. the kind of soul that makes nick cave sound like justin timberlake...
Mahalia Jackson - trouble of the world
saw a film from the 50s last night about racial tensions in america called 'imitation of life', about a down and out black woman with a mixed race daughter who looks white, who are taken in by a soon to be rish and famous white woman with a daughter, and their developing relationship as shit goes down. concentrates on the mixed race girls obsession with not wanting anyone to find out her mum is black, as she runs away from her mother to start life fresh as a 'white girl'. it ends with her mum dying of a broken heart, and she apologises in tears over her mums dead body.
it was strange because while it was a groundbreaking liberal attack on racism at the time - it was also unintentionally very racist itself. sort of like the first steps towards the civil rights movement, where they said "okay you can use the bus, but you have to sit at the BACK of the bus..." anyway, a highlight was this performance by mahalia jackson at the funeral. there are better videos of her on youtube, but you cant embed most of them, so this will have to do. all in all it was a pretty awful film, but id kind of recommend seeing it anyway as an education on what was considered forward thinking 50 years ago.
UNKLE - FOLLOW ME DOWN (FEAT. SLEEPY SUN)
THIS SONG IS SICK...
RADIOHEAD - WHERE I END AND YOU BEGIN (LIVE FROM THE BASEMENT)
BEST SONG EVER....AND WHAT....I'LL TAKE DOWN ANYONE WHOS SAYS DIFFERENT
múm - singalong
prefer their earlier stuff, and i wish they hadnt gone so pop, but still a beautiful album...... cant get over how much i love this band.
RADIOHEAD - NUDE (THREE LEAVES AND A HEAD REMIX)
RRRREEEEEEEEMMMMIIIIIXXXXXX!!!!
YES, IT'S THAT TIME AGAIN...
THIS ONE I HEARD BACK WHEN RADIOHEAD WERE RUNNIN THE REMIX COMPETITION FOR NUDE, WHICH JUDGING ON THE QUALITY OF THE ORIGINAL SONG, REALLY DOESN'T NEED A REMIX. AND I WOULD IMAGINE, JUDGING BY THE HUNDREDS OF INRAINBOWS REMIXES I LISTENED TO AT THE TIME, MOST COULDN'T ACCOMPLISH ANYTHING AMOUNTING TO EVEN A FRACTION OF THE QUALITY OF RADIOHEAD.
THERE WERE FEW, HOWEVER, THAT MET THE STANDARD THAT I WAS EXPECTING (OR MORE REALISTICALLY, HOPING FOR...)
I POSTED ONE A WHILE BACK...VIDEOTAPE MOJIB REMIX....
CHECK IT OUT, ITS A BRILLIANT MIX WITH A DJ SHADOW BEAT (OR SO I HAVE BEEN TOLD)
THIS ONE HAS A NEW ARRANGEMENT, AND IN ALL HONESTY, APART FROM THE FACT THAT THE VIDEOTAPE REMIX WAS MADE WITHIN WEEKS OF THE RELEASE OF THE ALBUM (WITHOUT THE AUDIO FILES RADIOHEAD HELPFULLY RELEASED...) IT IS SIMPLY A BETTER REMIX...
ENJOY...

Battle of Mice
i have no idea to react to this band, or how to describe them.... it hurts my ears to listen to them, and theyre so intense i actually get scared listning to them. their lyrics are so sadistic and twisted, yet beautiful simultaneously. one of the best bands lyrically ive ever come across. im downloading the album, ill let you all know if i can handle it - or if its just to cracked out.
Sigur Ros - Hoppipolla

Toe - Goodbye live
i love how they always set up their gear in the middle of the room instead of on a stage to make their shows more personal. i also raed they refused to sign to a label and started their own because they dont like deadlines. for long tommorow was their first real album and it took 9 years to make, they said they just played on the last one, but didnt have control of the album, which is why they used some of the same songs.
Mum - they made frogs smoke till they exploded
this band is too raaw
Unknown Artist - Green Grass Of Tunnel
